No matter how powerful the actors’ performances, how brilliant the director, or how adept the cinematographer, the film that audiences ultimately see is only as good as its editor. When tens to hundreds of hours of footage reach the editor’s desk, the success of the film is in their hands. Like a conductor who turns the unbridled chaos of an orchestra into the most beautiful of symphonies, a great editor can create a timeless masterpiece from a million disparate pieces, and that is exactly what editor Aijia Li accomplishes with every project she takes on.

WE’RE ALL THE SAME IN THE SHORT TERM

If you live in a large city, perhaps even one not so big, you most likely have a homeless population living amongst you. Even the label itself “homeless” is something that the majority of us unconsciously use to place a label on these individuals to see them as “others” and not as individuals at all. In truth, every single one of us is only steps away from being in the same situation. No person is immune to bad luck or tragedy which might place them in a dire and almost irreversible circumstance. Short Term is a film which hopes to lesson our disconnect with such people by presenting two different main characters of vast differences who find themselves faced with the same challenges. More than an exploration of obstacles, this film allows for the exploration of the humanity of its main characters, displaying them as people not defined by their circumstance but dealing with it while seeking a way out.

WITH GREAT CREATIVITY: THE MOON ALSO RISES

Creating a production so uncommon as this requires an unorthodox style and approach. Yao Yu sought out and enlisted lauded editor Aijia Li (who also served as colorist and sound designer for the film) to complement, and sometimes challenge her aims. Aijia reveals, “Yao YU is a pure artist and as such, has different thinking patterns and perspectives from most other people. It’s what makes them special but goes hand in hand with the need for more communication. Imagine if you’d never seen a helicopter and someone was describing a way for you to build one. The ideas she came up with would sometimes scare me and other times made me laugh out of surprise. The film needs a lot of re-creating work in editing. It was a challenge and a reaffirming experience.”

THE POWERFUL IMAGES AND SOUNDS OF FLOAT

The international embrace of this film (including European Independent Film Awards Winner, London Independent Film Awards Winner, Hollywood Film Competition Winner, and others) vets the decision made by Jiali Li and Aijia Li. The final scenes of the film take the audience into the heart of Kelly’s turmoil. The intensity of the climax is overwhelming. This melding of imagery, dialogue, and music is so perfectly achieved that it seems incomprehensible to think of the film any other way.
